All Hail DJ Harvey

All Hail DJ Harvey

There are superstar DJs, and there are rockstar DJs, and DJ Harvey belongs firmly in the latter camp. Not to say that he’s not also a very big deal, but over his thirty-three years in the industry, he’s carved out a niche as one of the hippest dudes in the industry — an old rock dog who found his home behind the decks and set about becoming house music’s answer to Mick Jagger. Resembling a slightly more grizzled Matthew McConaughey, with his signature aviator sunglasses, penchant for Hawaiian shirts and a megawatt grin, he had the kind of X-factor that made him stand out from other DJs in the ‘90s. This, combined with undeniable talent, solid connections and a healthy dose of ambition, meant that Harvey would soon become one of the leading figures in the scene. He played with David Mancuso of the Loft and Francois Kevorkian of Body and Soul, had a fabled residency at London’s Ministry of Sound, has played alongside Kraftwerk, LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, sells popular merch and music from his online Harvey’s General Store, turned Ibiza’s Pike’s Hotel into one of the island’s hottest destinations, and most recently, designed and opened Klymax Discotheque in Bali. A passionate purveyor of highly danceable soul, funk, disco, house, rock and indie music, Harvey is a bona fide legend of the scene. Don’t miss him at Elsewhere this weekend for an extended set, with lots of specials guests.

Shelter: Timmy Regisford / Colored Craig + Kilopatrah Jones / Lovie at Public Records

Four years after Paradise Garage closed, Shelter became THE New York club catering to the original underground spirit. In the ‘90s and ‘00s, kids from all over the city and beyond came to Shelter to DANCE, and that’s what you’ll see if you come check out one of the club’s most famous residents, Timmy Regisford, headlining the Shelter party at public records this weekend. People go to Shelter to  get all the way down, and alongside Regisford, LA’s Cranberry Craig, New York’s own dancing queen Kilopatrah Jones and DC-raised, NYC-based Lovie will be bringing the soul and energy to Gowanus.

We keep saying it, but ReSolute have been really bringing out the big guns of late. They’re at it again on Sunday with Louie Vega’s birthday party at Industry City. The house don is joined by his lovely wife Anané, whose sets tend towards Afro funky house, while Body and Soul alumnus Joe Claussell and Detroit’s beloved Moodymann round out a truly killer bill. Louie’s birthday is a gift to us all.
