TBD Musical Host: Party Dad & JAZ

TBD Musical Host: Party Dad & JAZ

Today we are introducing our new SoundCloud page. Where talented DJs will be our Musical Host at least once a month.

First out is our good friend Tay McNabb A.K.A Party Dad who together with JAZ played an unforgettable set at a TBD soft launch party in Miami. We recorded it and it's here for you to enjoy.

We sat down with Tay and asked him about music, creativity and what upcoming party not to miss in NYC. According to Resident Advisor he is a:  Disco oddball, balearic dork, enjoyer of fun music of all kinds.

What artists and/or genres have been your biggest musical inspirations?

I know a lot of people cite him, but David Mancuso's philosophy of music selection and party-throwing will forever be a massive inspiration to me. I've always found myself drawn to eclecticism and any artistic approach that kind of ignores specific genre tropes, so my biggest inspirations are people who operate like that, and he was definitely one of those people. Before I got into DJing and dance music, I used to throw indie rock shows in my living room and host all sorts of bands and performers, so when I learned that disco and club culture had roots in someone doing a similar sort of thing, it really clicked for me.

If you could spend one night with a person (dead or living), who would it be & what would you want to do together?

Hmmm, tough one. I think it'd be really rad to hang out with John Peel in his record room for a night and let him show me the weirdest shit from his collection. Ask me again tomorrow and it'd be a different music person but the same activity.

How do you feel music has changed in the last decade?

Aside from technological advances in how it's produced, I'm not sure how much music itself has really changed in the last decade. However, I think the average listener's awareness of just how MUCH music is (and has ALWAYS been) out there has increased by a ton. Tastes are diversifying, which is always a good thing. I work a few shifts a month in a record store, and the other day this towheaded 12-year-old who looked like he'd come straight from soccer practice walked in asking if we had any drum'n'bass records, then proceeded to flip his wig over a 50-year-old experimental sound collage LP I put on the store system while he was digging. Stuff like that warms my heart.

What places/spaces are you drawn to for creative inspiration?

Deep down I will always be a punk/DIY dork, so spaces that are kinda scuzzy and rough around the edges always get me excited and wanting to do and make things. A weirdo bar with a unique concept or an underground afters with a good soundsystem will always do more for me than a spiffy club with an immaculate social media presence. Ditto for anything focused more on "community" than "cool factor," if that makes sense.

What’s 1 party coming up in NYC are you most excited about?

Since moving to New York a few years ago, Good Room has become the first place I look at when checking out what parties are coming up. They have a ton of great stuff booked to celebrate their 10th anniversary next month, and while it's hard to pick just one event to highlight here, I'm gonna have to go with their 11/14 party where they've got major heroes James Murphy and Tom of England going B2B on the main dancefloor, plus Beewack and Timo Lee in the Bad Room. I've never had less than a spectacular time when any of those folks have been on the decks, so I'm sure that night's gonna be an absolute RIPPER!
